Under the direction of Dr. Albin Hänseroth, who took over as Manager and Artistic Director in 1997/98, with Detlef Meierjohann as Managing Director and Metzmacher as Principal Musical Director, spectacular productions were staged. Chief amongst these were Peter Konwitschny’s unconventional interpretation Wagner’s “Lohengrin", with Thomas Moser as Lohengrin and Inga Nielsen as Elsa. Surely, too, Olivier Tambosis’ production of Leos Janacek’s “Jenufa", with Eva Marton as sexton and Karita Mattila in the title role, almost devoutly celebrated by press and public alike. Apart from "Lohengrin", the successful Metzmacher/Konwitschny team jointly staged a total of 11 works at the Hamburg State Opera between 1997 and 2005, thus making a decisive contribution to the era. Major successes included "Der Freischütz", "Don Carlos", "Wozzeck", "Lulu", "The Mastersingers of Nuremberg", "Moses and Aaron" as well as "La Clemenza di Tito". As soon as they began working together, both received several awards in autumn 1998. Hamburg State Opera was awarded the Bavarian Theatre Prize for “Lohengrin", and Ingo Metzmacher was acclaimed as “Conductor of the Year” by “Opernwelt" magazine and was awarded the “Klassik-Echo” prize in October of the same year. Opera Manager and Artistic Director Louwrens Langevoort, who succeeded Albin Hänseroth in the year 2000, also created his own artistic milestones. He initiated a cycle of baroque operas, thereby enhancing the profile of Hamburg State Opera with a new direction of emphasis. Both press and public were particularly enamoured by productions such as "Alcina", "L'Incoronazione di Poppea" and "Giulio Cesare in Egitto". The children’s opera series entitled “Opera piccola", brought into being by Langevoort, was also very successful. Going by the principle of children staging opera for children, young artists are fostered as well as a young public. This Dutch Manager and Artistic Director also gave priority to fostering the young through the "International Opera Studios" project as well as to commissions for young composers and the creation of an outstanding ensemble.
