Simone Young starts new »Ring« in Hamburg

Hamburg, 04.26.2007
Simone Young, Music Director and General Manager of the Hamburg State Opera plans a new »Ring«-production. Starting with »Das Rheingold« on 16 March 2008, the Hamburg State Opera will show all four operas of Richard Wagner’s ‘opus magnus’ by 2010. The premiere of »Die Walküre« on 19 October 2008 is followed by »Siegfried« (18 October 2009) and »Götterdämmerung«
(17 October 2010). Two complete Ring Cycles are scheduled for the season 2010/2011. As Stage Director Simone Young has engaged Claus Guth, whose productions for the Bayreuth Festival (»Der fliegende Holländer«) and the Salzburg Festival (»Le Nozze di Figaro«) have been an overwhelming success as was his first work in Hamburg, »Simon Boccanegra«. The Designer Christian Schmidt who collaborated with Claus Guth for some years now, will be responsible for the sets and the costumes. Simone Young will conduct all performances as well as the two complete Ring Cycles in 2011. »For any opera house, the ‘Ring’ is a ‘mission statement’, a declaration of belief in the power of art«, says Music Director Simone Young. »It’s a great challenge and privilege to present this musical monument with my team here in Hamburg.«

The cast stars Falk Struckmann as Wotan, Lisa Gasteen as Brünnhilde, Stuart Skelton/Christian Franz/Stig Anderson as Siegmund, Christian Franz as Siegfried, and Yvonne Naef as Sieglinde. Also featured are Wolfgang Koch as Alberich, Mikail Petrenko as Hunding and John Tomlinson as Hagen.

The new ‘Ring’ production is supported by the ZEIT Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius and the Hamburg State Opera Foundation.
