Simone Young, Music Director and General Manager of the Hamburg State Opera, presented today her plans for the next opera season 2007/08. The Australian conductor opens her third season in Hamburg with a performance of »Otello« which she conducts herself. The first new production will be Jacques Offenbach’s »Les Contes d’Hoffmann« on 14 October 2007 followed by three important works of Richard Strauss: »Der Rosenkavalier« is scheduled for 18 November 2007 »Arabella« will be presented on 3 February 2008 and a concert performance of »Daphne« on 13 April 2008. The Hamburg State Opera’s new »Ring« production directed by Claus Guth starts with »Das Rheingold« on 18 March 2008. Simone Young will conduct all new productions except »Les Contes d’Hoffmann« which will be conducted by Emmanuel Plasson. As Stage Directors Simone Young has engaged Christine Mielitz (Hoffmann), Marco Arturo Marelli (Rosenkavalier) and Sven-Eric Bechtolf (Arabella). John Neumeier and his Hamburg Ballet will present two new productions in 2007/08: »Weihnachtsoratorium« (Johann Sebastian Bach) and »Joseph’s Legend« are created by John Neumeier.
The repertoire for the 2007/08 seasons spans 400 years of musical history from Händel’s baroque opera »Radamisto« to Hans Werner Henze’s »L’Upupa«. For her opera programme Simone Young has chosen to stage a revival of Verdis »Macbeth«, Puccinis »Turandot« as well as of Verdi’s »Don Carlos« in the French original version. Simone Young also focuses on Richard Strauss: with revivals of »Elektra«, Salome« and »Die Frau ohne Schatten« the Hamburg State Opera features a total of six productions by the great composer. Again on the programme are other successful productions such as »Simon Boccanegra«, »Jenufa«, »Elektra«, »Tannhäuser« and »La Bohème«. All in all 33 different operas and 11 ballets will be on the programme in 2007/08, starring excellent singers including Bo Skovhus, Falk Struckmann, Lisa Gasteen, Stuart Skelton, Emily Magee, Giuseppe Filianotti, Peter Rose, Elena Mosuc, Franz Grundheber and Salvatore Licitra.
